MUSIC CURRICULUM

At the Learning Academy Partnership, we believe in excellence for all. Enriching children’s education and experiences through a range of subjects and opportunities is a huge part of this. One of these opportunities is through our fantastic music provision.

Teaching:

Specialist music teachers delivery weekly lessons across KS1 and KS2, enabling the children to learn about performance, composition, notation and appraisal of a range of music, including music from other cultures and traditions. Children have the opportunity to learn instruments including brass, recorder, tuned and un-tuned percussion and ocarina and children of all abilities are able to learn a musical instrument through these weekly teaching sessions.

Singing:

The Learning Academy Partnership loves to sing! We meet every week as a school for singing assembly and have built up a strong whole school repertoire. As part of this, we hold regular services at Harvest, Christmas and Easter and provide a number of other opportunities for performance. Our Learning Academy Partnership choir is regularly invited to perform at a range of events such as the Rotary Club’s annual dinner, the Mayor’s civic service and Christmas civic service and the Torbay Schools Music Festival. Ilsham Academy Choir also visits local residential homes carol singing.

Clubs and Peripatetic Teaching:

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular clubs both in school and after school including Ocarina, Guitar, Samba Band, choir, recorder, music explosion (for our youngest children) and performing arts and also offer a number of private tuition opportunities such as piano and drum lessons. Our peripatetic teachers are fully qualified and deliver a high standard of musical tuition to students from both key stages.

Enrichment:

Having made strong links with a wide range of local musicians and music teachers across Torbay and Devon, we are able to offer a wide range of enrichment for our children. Some of the incredible activities and workshops which have taken place include; Welsh National Opera performance and workshop, drumming workshops, performing arts workshops and a range of both local and national musicians providing percussion, vocal and songwriting workshops.

To celebrate Ellacombe Academy’s 150th Birthday last year, Devon songwriter Richard James, Torbay based drummer Jordan Savage and BBC The Voice UK finalist Hannah Berney visited the school to work with the children to write and perform a song as part of our celebrations. It was a truly remarkable day in which the children had vocal coaching from Hannah Berney, learnt how to write a song with Richard James, and learnt how to use their hands, feet and body’s as a percussion instrument. The culmination of the project was our very own school song with an accompanying music video filmed by a London based film crew, as well as a ‘making of’ documentary, showing the creative process and learning from the day’s workshops.
